Surrealism
Surrealism was a cultural movement in art and other activities, emerging after World War I. Andre Breton, was the founder of the surrealistic movement , Surrealism is the expression of mental emotions without being altered. Surrealistic art forms characteristically do not have a specific shape or idea but contain differing and opposing ideas that at first glance may not work together. It is the expression of basic human instinct and imaginative faculties intertwined into one. When surrealism comes to photography, it wasn't believed that it was at all possible to create such a image in in the movements style. However, "Marquise Casati" by Man Ray, proved that wrong, the image featured multiple eyes for the photograph creating a surreal image, Even though it was an accidental blur that occurred in the photograph, it opened the eyes of those who wanted a chance to create surrealistic works. Man Ray and Lee Miller are considered as legends in surrealistic photography as they were both very successful to overcome the limitations of photography and create the surrealistic images the did.
Surrealist photographs are described as images, which represent dreams, night mares, hallucination and madness. Surrealist photographers are able to create surrealist photographs since they have practiced using photographic techniques effectively. Surrealism photography is mainly created using different techniques. The different techniques such as light and also lenses can instigate and become the basis for a surrealism image. Photomontage is a popular processing technique, where several images are coupled together to create one. photograms are also popular in which photographic paper can be used instead of camera to imprint the image. Multiple exposure is another technique used frequently in the surrealism movement, this is where the camera is clicked twice or more, without rolling the negative. The second image will be fixed or merged onto the first image to create the final image outcome however this process can now also be created by using photoshop for a quicker and more precise image in a result. |
