Bobby Doherty
Photographer Bobby Doherty studied at New York’s School of Visual Art as a child growing up. He decided that everything he shot should be vertical and this specific principle he has stuck to throughout his portfolio. His portfolio includes a range of vibrant and colourful works from still life photographs of jewellery to food. The mix of textures and materials particularly in his work with food are captifying as well as mesmerising to the eye due to the unique compositions that he creates. Bobby’s photographs now appear regularly in New York Magazine as well as other well known magazines around the world.
Bobby Doherty: Editorial Photography
Within this photograph there is a composition of egg. Each individual egg is facing the opposite if not a different way to the one that is next to creating an abstract photograph. In coherence to this the vivid colours emerging from the eggs themselves aid to the abstract feel of the photograph enhancing the mesmerising aspect of the image. The use of the use of the eggs facing the camera creates the engaging effect of texture being present in the photograph. The texture in this image is mainly seen on the eggs where the creases and individual lines on the surface are the most prominent feature within the image itself. The lighting that is presented overhead of the eggs defines the individual cracks more showing the clear highlights and shadows naturally created by the specific placement. The placement of the light was chosen specifically so that the vertical and symmetrical feel of the image that is desired can be clearly shown and onlookers are able to clearly recognise Doherty's unique work style. The image has a small depth of field however the pastel coloured background contrasting with the vibrancy of the unusual pink, purples and enhanced yellow coloured eggs creates the illusion that the image does in fact have a wider depth of field than is first perceived. This photograph is a still life image as there are no signs of portraiture or landscape present in the photo itself. The repetitive and vertical composition of this image closely links to the style of images that i have taken in relation to my theme of trade. In the style of Doherty i created my own vibrant image of kiwi's however i enhanced the original colour of the fruit rather than changing it. However i used the unique style of Doherty's composition to produce an equally mesmerising image.
To improve my image next time i will consider trying to cut the kiwi symmetrically in order to recreate Doherty's style of symmetry within my work. As well as this i will use contrasting and complimentary background colours to enhance the colours more or even more so i will try and change the colours of the individual fruit itself. Finally i will try and focus the individual still life subject more in order for it to be fore crisp and focused.
