Still life
A still life is a photography movemnent depicting mostly commonplace and everyday objects which may be natural or man-made. Still life gives the artist more freedom in the arrangement of elements within a composition are changeable and more flexible than moving objects and subjects such as landscape or portraiture. Within the high key still-life shoots i used a light box and placed a variety of objects ontop of it. This minimised the ammount of shadow and gave it a more high key effect with a crisp image in a result. I also used a peice of white card to reflect and bounce off light to highlight the top of some of the subject matters as well. my most successful high-key image from this shoot is the shell image where the foreground object is out of focus and the rest of the image is in focus. I created this composition by placing the bag that the shells were being held in onto the light box and then carefully placing the shells around the bag itself in order to get the effect of them falling out of the bag onto the box itself.
In low key still-life photography i used an umbrella light as well as a reflector to bounce the light off onto the object again highlighting different parts of it in order to create different tonal effects to enhance my understanding and develop my skills in this area of work. I used a range of different man made and natural objects within this shoot. The most successful image out of my low-key shoot was the photo of the gear above. The reflector adds light to a single part of the object itself also highlighting the water drops that i sprayed on with a water spray bottle. This contrast very well with the shadows in the image creating a harsh 3d tonal effect.
To improve further i would addjust my composition by using both man made and natural items in the same composition, i could also look at the textures on both to additionally create abstraction through the use of this. Or futhermore i could look at changing the photograph within photoshop by adjusting the exposure, colour hue or brightness itself in order to mimic the abstraction movement within my images
